PEACE LIKE A RIVER: honoring the handiwork of women
I have long been an admirer of the handiwork of women. These collage paintings are
intended as little shrines that call attention to the beautiful, often unsung, unsigned works
made by women in earlier times. Women have enhanced their homes and the lives of their
families through crochet, quilting, embroidery, knitting, sewing and dressmaking. As times
have changed, and we live very differently, I look again at the craft and skill shown in these
small works. In a world gone mad, I look to these humble, but gorgeous pieces of crochet as
emblems of a set of values I can espouse wholeheartedly: a caring for home and hearth, a
love of family, a love of beauty created by patient hands.
