These paintings could be described as “biomorphic
abstraction”–forms and processes inspired by those
found in the natural world. I love the idea of digging in
the earth and finding treasure. To me, digging is also a
metaphor for mining the treasure that resides in the
artist’s imagination.
In these works, I contemplate the many creatures found
(having gotten stuck) in ancient tar pits, providing
scientists and researchers now with a feast of
information about life on earth eons ago.
The extinction of species comes to mind, our loss of the
exquisite animals, insects and birds as the earth warms.
Perhaps the act of painting is one of remembering the
world as it once was and as we wish it to be.
